Easton Bike

His room was empty, wheelchair was there, bed empty when I arrived. I figured he was in the shower. I found him in a warm steamy shower, was too late to cut the hair on his neck, couldn't get to it the last time because of the neck rest.
Breakfast was fine dining with a blueberry lemon crepe, sausage links, oatmeal with brown sugar and some more blueberries and cranberry juice.
For some reason he had a little bit of nausea.
For OT we get to do the electrode stimulator! It is called the Easton Bike. He is wearing a short sleeved shirt so she can attach the electrodes easier. We will have to get a muscle shirt for better access to attaching the electrodes. Today is a slow day as she is testing each muscle. All the information goes on the attached computer so his progress is recorded. The electrodes last about 15 treatments before the sticky wears off. If he feels a burning then it is time for a new electrode pad.

Now we are ready for a warm up. The bike starts slow, a warm up and gradual increases and then a cool down.
He stops when he is getting too much of a shock, Beth changes the bike to a lower level. He has a speed set and if he can keep up with it no shocks.

      There goes Brahms lullaby.
The bike is good for range of motion, stimulation and cardio vascular. It is recommended to use the machine three times a week for thirty minutes so like regular exercise. He did five minutes, they had to stop and redo. Playing with Electricity, taking Bruce for a ride. It has birds tweeting and a picture of a man riding a bike. He went 2.4 miles.

Tanya here for speech, she hadn't seen the machine before and she asked him if he was holding his breath. He is doing 15 ahs. Next is The Bernoulli effect, faster moving air and slower moving air. We talk about that in Cub Scouts.  He is doing Sssss and then panting and placing his hand on his tummy to see how long it takes to run out of air. Voiceless sounds are Sssss, pa, pa, pas and ba, ba bas, and mmmmm. Go figure.
Now she wants him to count getting louder so when he yells at the children in the cafeteria they will hear him. He says he just whistles. So we sang, The First Noel, she says no audible sounds when inhaling because it can be heard over a microphone. Pitch glides are the final voice exercise.
PT was stretching and ranging on the mat.
Back to the room for potty break and a short snooze before lunch.
Lunch was a delicious clam chowder, (I had a bowl too) egg salad sandwich and tomato juice.
I left after lunch so I can be here for Andrew's home games, then we will head back for Christmas with Bruce.

Wow, that's like having a full-time job! A friend who had a stroke had the electrical impulses, though not on that kind of machine, and it has helped her a lot to increase muscle strength. Sounds like your family is very busy this holiday season. Merry Christmas!
